The town was started in 1839 by Captain Johann Augustus  Sutter when he settled at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers, and called it New Helvetia, a haven for the Swiss Countrymen who accompanied him. The Mexican government and Governor Alvarado granted 48,000 acres of land to Sutter, but they did not know that they had literally given away a goldmine. The discovery of gold in 1848 just thirty miles east of Sacramento, left New Helvetia and Sutter in ruins as most of the workers went prospecting. The news of the discovery of gold spread like wildfire around the globe. Sutter's fort was lost in the aftermath and his son took over another nearby area and named it Sacramento City. Because of its proximity to the Gold Rush Country, fortune hunters came to Sacramento by the thousands from all corners of the world and the population soared, reaching 10,000 within 7 months. It was recorded as the world's  largest human migration in history.

The Central Pacific Railroad came over the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, financed by the "Big Four" - Mark Hopkins, Charles Crocker, Collis P. Huntington and Leland Stanford. A deep water channel was dug from the coast caused Sacramento to experience further growth. Sacramento also experienced a problem with regular flooding, but the residents simply raised their streets 12 feet! After the gold rush, Sacramento was something left to offer its people as a center for trade in a greatly productive agricultural area.

California became a state in 1850 and Sacramento has been California's state capital since 1854. The city has been growing ever since and is now one of the fastest growing regions in the United States.
